Is Deer Antler Velvet Snake Oil?
Short answer: No, but kinda yes...
Long Answer:
Deer Antler Velvet is Technically Not Snake Oil
It is really amazing at how good it works at promoting physical vitality and strength of the muscles and joints, among of bunch of other benefits.
BUT,
Unlike what the 'fake news' and not-so-random internet searches may make you think, supplements like deer antler velvet are not drugs used to treat and manage diseases and conditions.
AND,
Some supplement companies make less-than-satisfactory deer antler velvet products with diluted thin extractions that can be sprayed from a nozzle, just like old-fashioned snake oil!

Question:
Then why do you sell deer antler velvet if not to treat your disease?
Answer:
For supporting, maintaining, and promoting health, wellness, and fitness performance.
Contrary to the large and completely uninformed websites, the clueless journalists, some hokey doctors, and sinister snake oil salesman, dietary supplements are highly regulated.
How are Supplements Regulated?
According to the FDA supplements are defined as food and don't treat, prevent, cure or mitigate disease, therefore making deer antler velvet a dietary food supplement.
Not Steroids...
Deer antler velvet is not a steroid drug, although it does work to promote healthy hormone metabolism for growth and regeneration.
What's the Difference Between Deer Antler Velvet Supplements?
Here is the lowdown, there are two main points:
(1). Buy a deer antler velvet supplement with enough deer antler velvet in it.
In other words, avoid aloe vera, skip on wild yams, and toss the tribulus and tongkat ali. If you want this other stuff then take it separately, because a little bit of that stuff doesn't work much either.
(2). Definitely avoid dumping your money into diluted bottles of confusing marketing.
Are you a supplement manufacturer? Probably not, so why does this matter to you as the consumer when they make you go through the mathematical calculation and conversions like it is your job of interpreting it all like you are going to be making deer antler velvet? Focus on how much deer antler velvet is listed in the supplement.
How Much Deer Antler Velvet Per Serving? What's Your Dose?
You gotta take enough to make deer antler velvet work.
When looking at some products, they barely contain deer antler velvet and are focusing solely on growth factors as the only active constituent.
Really?
That's all? Nothing more? So, supposedly it's all about the growth factors? Nope! It isn't just growth factors; deer antler velvet is so much more than just a singular constituent.
Knowing what deer antler velvet is will greatly help one understand.
Simply put, deer antler velvet is a holistic tonic with lots of unique nutrition and constituents with plenty of supporting benefits that work together to build health, strength, and vitality.
Deer Antler Velvet Market Comparison
Off we go to the deer antler sprays that generally range from 10 bucks to 50 bucks and maybe more!
Supposedly spritzing sprays of deer antler velvet containing growth factors, peptides, lipids, and minerals into the mouth is more effective than simply taking it?
Wait what was that?
The major consideration here is: how dilute is the extract if one can just spray it in the mouth. Overall this is 'fakey' supplement marketing aimed at making you possibly feel cool.
Keep This In Mind and Mouth = Take Enough Deer Antler Velvet
Two simple ways (actually 3):
(1). Hold the extract in your mouth for a minute or two.
(2). Dilute deer antler velvet extract in a little bit of water and slowly sip on it.
(3). Put it in a juice or shake.
Hydro-alcohol Extract for Full Potency
Another weird thing to ask about sprays is: why do these deer antler velvet sprays have no alcohol? Did they miss something? Such as using Russian researched alcohol extraction methods. The alcohol extract is what is used for a pre-workout.
Also,
Why do they make these sprays all clumped together with things you should avoid like citric acid and potassium sorbate, flavorings or something random like aloe vera, wild yam, or tribulus? If you want that stuff take it separately to control your dose of deer antler velvet.

Amount of extract per bottle: 1,000 milligrams to 2,500 milligrams average in the entire bottle of many branded deer antler velvet sprays.
Someone would have to drink the whole bottle to get one daily dose equivalent of Tonic Tinctures Deer Antler Velvet!
Whoa, that can get pretty expensive very quickly as some bottles can run $100's of dollars for a little bit of deer antler velvet in the whole bottle, let alone one dose.
How you avoid preservatives: is your extract Hydro-alcoholic?
Traditionally, in the time-honored industry of tincture extraction and making deer antler velvet across the world, the solvent to make deer antler velvet into a supplement should be hydro-alcoholic for full potency.
Why hydro-alcohol?
(1). Natural preservative
(2). Alcohol is required to extract many of the beneficial constituents and water is able to extract everything that is soluble in water.
(3). Alcohol and water extracts are 99% absorbable.

Wait! How Much IGF-1 Is In The Bottle?"
But this other brand has 25,000 nanograms, another has 1,000,000 nanograms of IGF-1. Big deal! Right?
A nanogram is pretty small. What's the difference between a little bit and a little bit? Hmmm...
Growth factors work by their presence in the diet which is one reason why milk and beef build strong bodies, raw milk, raw eggs and rare cooked beef have growth factors also.
There is not much difference in taking varying amounts of micro-nanogram doses of IGF-1 orally IF there is not much deer antler velvet in the bottle.
Like any tonic, the key to deer antler velvet supplementation is to be consistent in taking it, the more often you take it, along with food and other supplements, the more deer antler velvet will work for you.
The IGF-1, and other growth factors and constituents all-together are part of safe and healthy endocrine response for healthy hormones. It's not magic, because it takes a lot of the concurrent nutrition in the form of protein and other recovery nutrition to make deer antler velvet work.
Product Label Comparison

Tonic Tinctures Deer Antler Velvet is a 1:2 extraction ratio which means {1 ounce (~28,500mgs) of deer antler velvet} is extracted into a {2 ounce bottle}. This is the lower alcohol gooey thick extraction full of all the nutrients and constituents found in deer antler velvet.
Each dropper is ~500mgs of deer antler velvet.
The Lowdown: We process in-house and are able to pull a concentrated hydro-alcoholic extraction, without heat, a total of four times on the slices before they are exhausted and completely utilized yielding a think liquid extract that is 35% alcohol by volume.

The market is full of these multi-ingredient deer antler spray formulations under several different labels, one being used by a large corporate supplement retailer.
Spritz! Spritz!
They list deer antler velvet on their label, but do so with nearly a dozen other ingredients including Aloe Vera, Niacin, Artificial Flavors, Glycerin and a couple preservatives added for good measure. The label will state 300mgs or 1000mgs per serving, but of what ingredients?
Not Based On Deer Antler Velvet Serving Science
These manufacturers make no claim as to potency for dosage clarifications to make sure you are getting enough deer antler velvet. They may use IGF-1, marker of potency, but deer antler velvet potency is more than just growth factors, since there is more than just growth factors in deer antler velvet.

Brand X claims to use an extraction that is 43:1 or 70:1 or 80:1. This means 43 kilogram to make 1 kilogram powder; 70 kilograms to make 1 kilogram powder; 80 kilograms to make 1 kilogram powder. BUT, it's a liquid?
Tricky tricky! Seems they forgot a step since they are selling a liquid.
This is done with laboratory equipment and must go through an additional step of adding this powder extract to a glycerin filler base or an alcohol base - a.k.a dilution tincture.
But they have extracted nothing into the liquid. They simply add a pile of powder of about 5,000 milligrams (or less!) into their "pure" supplement.
Ouch, that hurts the buck doesn't it, because these can cost 80-250 bucks a bottle? Save yourself and get the best.

Tonic Tinctures Power Velvet is a 1:1 extraction ratio which means {2 ounces (~57,00mgs) of deer antler velvet} is extracted into a {2 ounce bottle}.
Each dropper is ~1000mgs of deer antler velvet.

The Lowdown: we process in-house and are able to pull a concentrated hydro-alcoholic extraction, without heat, a total of four times on the slices before they are exhausted and completely utilized yielding a think liquid extract that is 45% alcohol by volume. This extra concentrated alcohol extract focuses on the benefits of the scientifically studied Russian alcohol extracts.

Brand Z claims to use an extraction that is over 43:1. By now we can recognize something is amiss from our previous example of ratio extraction with big numbers like 43:1 and 80:1.
This ratio stuff is made to be confusing.
And checking their website we can verify {43 pounds deer antler velvet} are extract into {1 pound deer antler velvet powder extract}, of which they add 1,000mgs to 1 fluid oz.
That's a minimum daily dose for some people.

This company calls their supplement deer antler velvet and lists IGF-1 as an ingredient on the label (that's a no-no!) with artificial flavors, preservatives, and soy stabilizers.
But the potency of their deer antler velvet cannot be deduced as they use only IGF-1 as the marker for deer antler velvet potency. Yes, it is true that deer antler velvet contains growth factors. And then they offer several different strengths of very small nanogram doses of IGF-1 for increasing greater amounts of money. Are they adding IGF-1 to the bottle along with deer antler velvet or turning deer antler velvet into IGF-1

Brand T is a bunch of similar manufacturers that are available from specialty purveyors of tonic herbs on the internet and on eBay.
Brand T's deceivingly use a partial extraction ratio which can be 3:1, 8:1, or 20:1. If we check the units for their ratio this is kilograms raw material into kilograms powder extract. They tell you its 20 times as potent! That's not what 20:1 means, 20:1 means 20 kilograms to make 1 kilogram.
Tricky tricky!

The reason deer antler velvet works is because it is made of the stuff that builds bodies.
Deer Antler Velvet Feeds the Body
Bodily tissues, such as muscle, bone, skin, hair, nails, and joints crave the nutrients and constituents found within deer antler velvet. These raw materials that feed the body include:
- Protein and Collagen
- Glucosamine and Chondroitin
- Hyaluronic Acid
- Unique Peptides such as Growth Factors
This above nutrition will assist the body with healing, regenerating, and growing. Specifically supporting:
- Endocrine Function
- Muscle Contraction
- Nerve Stimulation
Essential Nutrients are Foundational
Easily absorbable essential minerals that are found in deer antler velvet are vital to developing strength for fitness performance, lifting weights, developing physiques, and weight-loss programs:
All of these minerals have functions of supporting and maintaining health that the weightlifter, bodybuilder, and physique athlete will greatly appreciate:
- Calcium
- Magnesium
- Phosphorus
- Zinc
- Manganese
- Sodium
Endocrine Hormones
The minerals found within deer antler velvet are vital to normal endocrine function, specifically concerning normal growth and efficient regeneration.
Minerals Support Glandular Hormones
Most important: calcium is critical to parathyroid gland function and the normal functioning of the whole endocrine system. The parathyroid glands, which are embedded in the neck along with the thyroid gland, support hormones concerning energy, regeneration and growth.
Peptide Hormonal Regeneration
Deer antler velvet supports regeneration by its naturally occurring and included trace nanogram amounts of growth factors such as IGF-1, IGF-2 and cytokines. These hormone molecules communicate directly with the endocrine system and the pituitary gland.
Optimal Glandular Function
Deer antler velvet works by the combination of all its constituents to support normal endocrine function thus supporting the pituitary gland for growth and regeneration hormones. When the pituitary gland is supported by a functioning endocrine system, and by proper nutrition, the body will be able to work optimally.

Muscle Contraction

Calcium and magnesium found in deer antler velvet are essential to every muscular contraction in the body.
A lack of calcium limits muscle contraction that in turn hampers building a strong body.
- Calcium is necessary for muscle contraction
After a muscle does work it must release its tissues to allow the circulation of blood to remove by-products of fatigue and support immediate recovery and long-term regeneration, repair, and growth.
- Magnesium is necessary for muscle relaxation
More responsive blood-flow shuttles used-blood from muscles to the liver more effectively for lactic acid conversion back into energy; thus maintaining the lactic acid cycle.
Calcium and magnesium work together to make muscles work better.
(Go To Strength and Stamina)⇧
Nerve Impulses

Deer antler velvet promotes progress by supporting the ability to do more work and performing harder through nervous innervation.
Electrical Bioavailable Minerals
Deer antler velvet contains additional minerals that support nerve impulses and lifting technique for proper form and the stimulation of whole muscle groups for the best performance and development.
- Sodium, Zinc and Phosphorus are highly electrical minerals that assist nerve impulses to support the contraction of more muscles in groups.
Sodium, zinc and phosphorus work with calcium to support the contraction of entire muscle groups required in compound exercises such as:
- Bench Press
- Squat
- Deadlift
A few well-done working sets of these exercises is all you need to develop all the major muscle groups for a fully developed and strong physique.
Muscle and Joint Flexibility
Additionally, the mineral manganese is necessary for pliable muscles and joints, which means that manganese help muscles and joints maintain stretchable and flexible properties concerning efficient ranges-of-motion and proper posturing of muscle groups.
- Manganese is necessary for flexibility and posture

As A Pre-Workout

Deer antler velvet has a recent history of being used as a performance enhancer in Olympic weightlifting sports by the Russians during the 1970's and 80's.
Part of a Pre-work
When taking deer antler velvet as a pre-workout, feel free to combine deer antler velvet with any other pre-workout supplements, be sure to start with a minimum serving of deer antler velvet. Your dose will be less since you are also taking a pre-workout. Someone can only take so much of anything at any time.
Supplemental Performance Enhancement
The alcohol extract of deer antler velvet, as used and studied by the Russians, is the pre-workout enhancer part of deer antler velvet and is most found in our Power Velvet which is recommended during times of performance enhancement.
To use as a pre-workout: take 30 minutes minimum before working out. Start with 1 dropper the first couple workout sessions and then work up to more if desired. DO NOT take on an empty stomach, especially with a pre-workout - try to have eaten a meal or something substantial food-wise in the previous 2-4 hours.
Is Deer Antler Velvet Banned!?
No, deer antler velvet is not banned. Deer antler spray was banned for a very brief peroid of time due to scammy marketing that compared it to a drug which still goes on today.
What is Deer Antler Spray?
Deer Antler Velvet Sprays are dilutions of deer antler velvet with little nutritional value and often mixed with other vitamins and herbs in an attempt to falsely mimic performance enhancing drugs (PED) like IGF-1.
Deer Antler Velvet is Not the Drug IGF-1
Deer antler sprays tricked a lot of people and still do by their whacky marketing which has left them with a bad experience, even big names and big sports. How, they put IGF-1 as an ingredient on the supplement label, so are they adding drugs?
False Marketing Claims Strike Again

Several years ago, back in 2013 deer antler spray became a controversy that got Ray Lewis into trouble when he was taking deer antler spray which the NFL thought was a drug due to false marketing claims.
Tricky Devil Did It
Luckily Ray Lewis wasn't kicked off the team and out of football for using deer antler spray, which was confusingly thought to contain the banned drug substance IGF-1.
Major Sports Leagues Ban Drugs
The National Football League (NFL) banned deer antler velvet anyway because it naturally contains anabolic growth factors called IGF-1 and was falsely associated with performance enhancing drug (PED) use. Equally ridiculous, Major League Baseball (MLB) banned deer antler velvet supplements for possibly containing testosterone drugs, not IGF-1.
WADA Bans Deer Antler Velvet - Then POOF! WADA Un-bans Deer Antler Velvet, WTF?
The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) was freaking out, quickly banned deer antler velvet, and then changed their minds to only warn athletes. Professional Golf Association (PGA) athlete Vijay Singh, got suspended. Vijay and the PGA settled out of court in 2018 over being wrongly accused of using a PED.
Does the Label Say IGF-1? Beware!
Inaccurately labeled supplements that claim they contain IGF-1 as an ingredient in the supplement facts can get athletes sanctioned. Are other companies adding IGF-1 drugs to their supplements?
DoD is Scared of Deer Antler Velvet
The Department of Defense (DoD) mistakenly claims that deer antler velvet is risky and wrongly advises athletes to exercise 'extreme caution' because there may be growth factors, which are an everyday and integral part of animal and human cellular metabolism, in the velvet antlers of deer! LOL! The DoD thinks supplements, like deer antler velvet, are NOT 'real' food. Isn't all of this just dumb since the definition of a supplement is that it is food?
Medical Quacks Prove a Supp
Contradictory websites like the NIH compare deer antler velvet to drug medication and are scared that it contains growth factors; plus they prove it is NOT a performance enhancing drug. wtf, right? Isn't this medical quackery?

It's sure funny how confused everyone got about performance enhancing drugs and a simple dietary supplement like deer antler velvet!
And yet many will still be tricked into thinking deer antler velvet is a drug...spritz, spritz the deer antler velvet spray!

Jason J. Duke - Owner of Tonic Tinctures
Thanks for the two questions Damon:
Q: Damon – “Will I fail a drug test taking deer antler”
A: Jason – Deer antler velvet is a dietary supplement; deer antler velvet contains no drugs. If you are worried about the IGF-1, oral IGF-1 is found in foods like milk, eggs, deer antler velvet and pearls, and it won’t show up on a drug test, even when taken sublingually. Saying all this, we cannot vouch for other brands in this regard as they may add other things to their products in addition to deer antler velvet. BUT if a company list IGF-1 anywhere on the label, avoid taking it since this is a claim they may be adding it to their product and doping agencies will take action against athletes using products listing drug ingredients. Some companies even call their products by drug names!
Q: Damon – “does anybody take this brand do ufc”
A: Jason – Over the last ten years many different athletes from various sports have taken deer antler velvet to support performance and recovery. The concentrated nutrition in deer antler velvet is very important for physical stamina and muscular power. They often go with the Power Velvet or grab the Power Pack to achieve the necessary consistency in dosages to maintain nutritional levels.

Thanks for all the questions, feel free to ask more! I’ll start with the first one and work my way down the list.
Q: Flora – “Is deer antler fda approved?”
A: Jason – Deer antler velvet is regulated by the FDA as a dietary food supplement. Deer antler velvet is not an approved drug by the FDA and does not treat, prevent, cure or mitigate disease.
Q: John C. – “how long does it take to get deer antler velvet to work when should I start expecting results”
A: Jason – Be sure to take enough according to the dosage guidelines and if you take our brand you should notice within the first couple days to a week at a consistent dose. Oftentimes a loading phase may be required depending on how deficient you may be in the nutrition found in deer antler velvet. Most clients notice results at 2-3 droppers a day best taken in the morning around breakfast time. Do not skip meals as this will negate the effects since the endocrine system requires protein to function effectively.

Q: Amanda – “I paid 150 for a scam! That is so mean! Will this deer antler work for women’s weight loss? Which one do I take I workout at the gym 5 days a week with weights and the yoga.”
A: Jason – Your complaint is a common one we’ve heard over the years which is why we wrote this blog post. I’ve had so many conversations of people being disappointed by their deer antler velvet experience that I want to get people off to the right start. As for weight loss, both men and women may use deer antler velvet as part of weight loss physique enhancement lifestyle. By itself deer antler velvet will supply lots of essential nutrition while supporting healthy hormone production. Overall, with a dialed-in diet and loss weight directed lifestyle, deer antler velvet will give one the strength and stamina so they may better achieve exercise goals. Deer antler velvet helps with weights, circuit training and yoga and all forms of exercise; it’s a physical tonic!
Q: Jeanne – “Me too, does this work for weight loss I didn’t see that”
A: Jason – Yes, sure thing, see my answer to Amanda above. But since you asked I’ll mention another secret to deer antler velvet weight loss. Protein up with eggs and/or other food sources of quality protein at the same time as taking deer antler velvet. The fats and vitamin D in the eggs will also help adrenals and growth, regeneration, and sex hormones. Plus eggs have energy vitamins like choline and B12.
Q: Joe – “what about for sex does this work for having better sex”
A: Jason – With a healthy lovers lifestyle deer antler velvet will supply performance nutrition and support healthy hormones. The calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, and essential fatty acid lipids in deer antler velvet will assist contraction and release of tissues and boost circulation. Plus it helps support stamina resist fatigue so you derive more satisfaction.
Q: Will – “Is deer antler spray bad for the heart?”
A: Jason – Great question! In fact, deer antler velvet contains heart nutrition in the form of major important bio-available minerals. Calcium assist heart contraction and the strength of the heart. Magnesium assist heart relaxation. Phosphorus assist electrical impulses of the nerves in the heart. SO all these minerals work together to support heart function and health. PLUS, the essential fatty acid lipids give the heart energy and support circulation. Studies of the alcohol extract containing supplements to have shown cardiovascular benefits that confirm the bio-science. Use as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle that support heart health.
Q: Tommy – “How much igf1 is in this version”
A: Jason – We don’t test and market our batches of deer antler velvet for IGF-1 as IGF-1 is naturally in deer antler velvet along with other growth factors. Don’t confuse the IGF-1 in deer antler velvet with a drug, that’s hokey and scammy. What is key is to be consistent in dosage to derive the naturally benefits. Read the section in this article about how IGF-1 works naturally and how you can add additional foods to your diet to increase growth factor and hormonal support. As I mentioned to Jeanne, eggs and deer antler velvet work very well together. Personally, I eat 4-5 eggs every morning with my deer antler velvet, but 2-3 should suffice as part of a complete breakfast. Oh, yes, you can take deer antler velvet with coffee.

Q: Jim – “Is there really this much fake news all over the place? The Russians must be hoaxing my deer velvet! Lol!”
A: Jason – The fake supplement hoaxing has been going on for quite some time and really got bad back in 2013 with Ray Lewis. People literally thought they were buying anabolic steroid on the internet. Many women were interested, but scared-off by the testosterone and steroid claims other companies made so we earned a lot of trust from our female clients, as well as our better educated and wiser men clients.
Q: Jeb – “What about my kid, will this mess up with growth plates there still open?”
A: Jason – This isn’t drugs Jeb so its not going to cause weird and whacky side-effects. Indeed, it will support healthy growth of bones and joints with a healthy diet full of nutrition. Other vitamin and mineral supplements would be highly recommended in this case and as long as you supervise the dose and seek professional guidance where appropriate you may give your child deer antler velvet.
Q: Mark – “Which one do I take for lifting weights, I get this isn’t drugs, I want to maximize my training and want better results.”
A. Jason – We formulated the Power Velvet for strength and physique athletes. What is important is to be consistent with dosages and take enough and it will work. You don’t always need to take the Power Velvet, as this is a good morning and performance tonic, so the Power Pack is a great affordable option that is always discounted for our clients.
Q: Irene: “Can organic bone broth be substituted for deer antler supplement?”
A: Jason – Although bone broth contains many of the same constituents as deer antler velvet, such as collagen and minerals, what is not in bone broth is the growth factors and lipids that are found in deer antler velvet which are responsible for many of the hormonal and regenerative and circulatory benefits. Of course you could take bone broth with deer antler velvet since deer antler velvet will help the bone broth work better. So why not take them both, the more nutrition we get the more health we promote!

Kelvin asked a question.
Q: “Can a person with a health condition or disease take deer antler velvet? Will this affect my blood pressure?”
A: Your physician is the one to ask about the supplements you take in relation to any condition or disease you may have. Most tonics and superfoods like deer antler velvet are high in nutrients and food-grade, so most of the time there shouldn’t be any issues as taking these supplements as part of a complete diet for health and fitness. Deer antler velvet has nutrients that are part of the vascular blood pressure system in the body with vascular health benefits of strengthening the heart and circulation from the electrolytes and lipids that is contains. For example: calcium assist heart contraction and magnesium assists heart relaxation while also being electrolytes that support hydration which is important with how the body maintains blood pressure.

J-dog asks some good questions.
Q: J-dog – “Hello I was just wondering if your “deer antler velvet” or “power velvet” contains IGF-1?”
A: Jason – Yes, deer antler velvet does contain IGF-1 just like cheese, milk, and eggs, but in a concentrated form that may be cold-processed to preserve the hormonal peptides known as growth factors. The ‘tips’ of deer antler velvet contain more of the growth factors and more of these ‘tips’ are used in our Power Velvet, but all of our extractions contain IGF-1 and growth factors. Consistency is the key.
Q: J-dog – “Also, was just wondering if these products are ok for use by military members.”
A: Jason – Deer antler velvet is a supplement. Deer antler velvet is not a drug. So unless the military specifically says not to take concentrated nutritional supplements such as deer antler velvet than you should probably avoid consumption. Your question isn’t entirely strange since many ‘marketers’ of deer antler velvet try to sell it like it is some rare and expensive drug, deer antler velvet is not a drug and it is not rare and expensive to derive the many important benefits. You can read about the deer antler spray drug hoax on our blog “What is the Best Deer Antler Velvet Supplement?”

Erik asks a very relevant question to deer antler velvet supplementation.
Q: Erik – “In what way’s would one say that deer antler capsules would be beneficial for my mother who is 56yrs old and is almost always hurting from her lower and upper back muscles as well as Migraine headaches?”
A: Jason – As a supplement, deer antler velvet doesn’t treat migraine headaches, this is best done by her healthcare practitioner. Otherwise, deer antler velvet is good to strengthen muscles, joints and posture, so this would be a reasonable nutritional way to strengthen the body from it’s full-spectrum of nutrition, such as collagen, glucosamine, and hyaluronic acid for building up joint cartilage, including bio-available calcium, magnesium and manganese which all help muscle contraction and relaxation and release respectively. Other growth factors and peptides will benefit regeneration for better recovery and anti-fatigue benefits. Altogether, these nutrients will help with joint discomfort and muscle soreness for just about anyone. The capsules are an easy way to take deer antler velvet which is best recommended with food and especially meals with enough protein, for example: 4-6 oz of meats or at least 2-3 eggs. Be sure to get that protein in every meal to take full advantage of deer antler velvet. At least 2 capsules with 1-3 meals a day will be a great addition to any diet, the breakfast dose often important for many clients. See our capsule page for more dosage suggestions. A good combination for joint and muscle health is deer antler velvet and cinnamon powder or dark-colored blue and purple berries like blueberries or even a super affordable grape seed extract. We have a blog post titled ‘Benefits of Dark Colored Plant Pigment Polyphenols’ which includes joint health and discomfort as a studied benefit from including these potent superfoods in one’s nutritional program.

Teri asked a question about capsules.
Q: Teri – “I am looking into testing out the deer antler capsules – are these made with the tips or just the bottoms?”
A: Jason – Thanks for allowing us to clear up any confusion you may encountered by contrived marketing elsewhere on the internet about deer antler velvet. We use a freshly powdered formulation of all parts of the deer antler velvet in our capsules, but we especially focus on using the middles section which is full of constituents that are raw materials that benefit the joints and the regeneration of tissues. The tips are known for their waxy lipids and are better extracted and absorbed by using hydro-alcohol tinctures as according to the Russian research; the Power Velvet using the most waxy tips during extraction. All of our deer antler velvet formulas use bottoms because of their necessary highly concentered essential mineral co-enzyme factors. Overall capsules are a very good economical source of the wide spectrum of velvet antler nutrition for those not directly interested in the alcohol extract benefits found in the tinctures. Please see our capsules page for more information about comparisons between liquids and capsules.

Thanks for the question!
Q: Mike – “Hi. Does deer antler velvet become more beneficial the older one gets?”
A: Jason – Great question Mike! In fact, deer antler velvet is beneficial for the young and old. And the middle-aged! Everyone can benefit from the essential nutrition within deer antler velvet, such as bio-available necessary trace minerals, essential lipids that support circulation and heart health, and peptides that support joints, gut health and hormones that naturally keep one vital, youthful and regenerating when taken as part of a complete diet and conscientious lifestyle. We’ve had feedback of better feeling knees, fingers, wrists and lower backs, because the combination of constituents feed the joints, muscle and circulation to help with any discomfort one may have in these problem areas. And the nutrition is important for the body so that it may work better and have energy to do what we want. And its easy-to-take everyday with a highly absorbable liquid extract so you get your bang for the buck!
Mike Brown
Hi. Does deer antler velvet become more beneficial the older one gets?
Jason J. Duke - Owner of Tonic Tinctures
Thanks for all the questions, feel free to ask more! I’ll start with the first one and work my way down the list.
Q: Tom – “Which deer antler is the best quality?”
A: Jason – Hi Tom, all of great quality, what is important is to choose what is a best fit for your health, nutrition and lifestyle goals. We always recommend starting with the regular strength Deer Antler Velvet and moving up to the stronger Power Velvet if you need more potency.
Q: Rachelle – “I want to get this for exercising and losing weight which one do I get”
A: Jason – Good question Rachelle. Choose a liquid version since these are performance oriented that will assist exercise with anti-fatigue benefits and joint health and make things easier as you move towards your physique goals. We always recommend starting with the regular strength Deer Antler Velvet and moving up to the stronger Power Velvet if you need more potency. What is important is to be consistent with the daily dosages for best results.
Q: Gregory M. – "Does deer antler velvet have side-effects, will this cause my hormones to get messed up and is it dangerous?
A: Jason – Deer antler velvet is not a drug and does not have side effects. Deer antler velvet is not a steroid drug and will not interfere with hormones. Deer antler velvet is not dangerous when used correctly as a concentrated dietary food supplement that is added to a healthy diet and lifestyle. Please see our blog post ‘What is the Best Deer Antler Velvet Supplement’ to help clear up any confusion.
Q: Teri – “I have been looking at the reference material on your web page. I was reading about the Russian way of extracting the healthful properties and that they use mural blood in process. Do you use blood from the animal as well or is blood used in any way or found in your products?”
A: Jason – Excellent question for someone digging deep and learning. First the Russian way of extracting deer antler velvet is to take the blood-drained, hot-water cleaned and sanitized velvet antler sticks and begin a lengthy process of repeatedly drying them according to tradition and government and industry food handling standards. Next is to slice the sticks and possibly further powder it where the deer antler velvet is then added to alcohol. A weaker alcohol spirit extraction can be made at home or a lab concentrated extraction can be produced for the scientific benefits. No blood is used in the making of deer antler velvet since that is immediately drained at the farm and sold or consumed fresh as a native and cultural food in Russia and Asia which is usually reserved for those who wish to have deer blood. Deer blood is a by-product of deer antler velvet production and deer antler velvet is a by product of raising deer for meat on farms. Deer farming is an ethically regulated industry overseen by government and/or industry licensed veterinarians depending on the country. Lastly, our products do not use Maral Deer as these are usually hunted and corralled by hunters according to regulations, instead we use the Chinese Plum Blossom Deer Velvet and New Zealand Red Deer Velvet, since these are the largest industries that farm deer and are the most regulated with consistency in quality. That article is given for reference to show how deer are important part of some cultures diet and lives, plus it mentions the traditional alcohol extract and it also mentions how some people can take food and supplements a bit too far with expectations. Always use dietary food supplements as part of healthy complete diet and active lifestyle for best benefits and consult a professional when and where appropriate. Thanks again for this great question.

I have been looking at the reference material on your web page. I was reading about the Russian way of extracting the healthful properties and that they use mural blood in process. Do you use blood from the animal as well or is blood used in any way or found in your products?
