Cordyceps Mushroom Specs

There are many tonic mushrooms to choose from in our tonic repertoire, and most unique is the is the Cordyceps Sinensis (Cs-4) fungus, which, in the wild, grows on a caterpillar and has many benefits that are imbued to the one who consumes it. Although it does have the stamina boosting attributes found in all tonic herbs and the properties specific to all tonic mushrooms, it is best to focus on Cordyceps' special attributes for supplementation. These special attributes listed and explained below have gained Cordyceps status as a premier lung tonic and have earned it recognition as a powerful exercise and fitness supplement.

Organic Lab-Grown Cordyceps Has a Vibrant Orange-Brown Color

1. Respiratory Function - Oxygen Utilization

Constituents increase utilization of oxygen strengthens lung function. For fitness enthusiast, this quickly translates into profound aerobic and steady-state performance benefits, as well as high altitude adaptability.

More oxygen is profound for our organism: unhealthy conditions have a more difficult time flourishing in oxygen rich tissues, more oxygen to the brain and nervous system means better performance mentally and physically.

2. Stamina & Endurance - Increased Cellular Energy

The ability of this mushroom to increase cellular energy directly gives us better stamina from faster rates of energy recovery after aerobic and anaerobic exercise.

What is Cordyceps Mushroom?

Cordyceps, or caterpillar fungus, is naturally found at high elevations around the Himalayas. It is harvested wild by traditional cultures in China and India and upon the Tibetan Plateau where it is known as “yartsa gunbu” since the 15th century and also in Nepal where it is called “Jeeban Buti”. The Chinese name, "dong chong xia cao" translates into English as ""summer-grass, winter-worm".  The traditional strain is known as Cordyceps Sinensis which is only harvested wild, and is very expensive costing 5000 to 50000 dollars a pound depending on source and quality.

Cordyceps Strains

Traditionally many varieties of Cordyceps strains have been consumed

As with any tonic herb one will often discover many different varieties of Cordyceps that may be used with similar attributes and results. Cordyceps is one that can include several possible choices for consumption. All across Asia, for many centuries, people from Nepal, Tibet, Japan, Bhutan and China have been collecting this unique mushroom. It is most certain that many different species have been consumed for their life imbuing benefits. In a small town southwest of Shanghai China is a Cordyceps museum known as the Chinese Cordyceum where one can find hundreds of different kinds of Cordyceps on display.

Cordyceps CS-4 is the Most Studied and Most Affordable Variety

While the best known Cordyceps is Cordyceps sinensis, this variety is rare and expensive as it may only be collected wild in the Himalayas due to cultivation being restrictive to proper yields and potency. With the advent of cultivation a highly studied and efficacious variety has become much more widely available to the world known by the name Paecilomyces hepialid or Cordyceps CS-4. This is the most affordable and available strain available concerning the desired benefits of Cordyceps.

Many purveyors of Cordyceps confuse the names and until recently experts discovered that the name Cordyceps sinensis is incorrect as it has now been renamed Ophiocordyceps sinensis. As identification and classification continue many more strains will be cultivated and harvested for their tonic capabilities.

Current Cordyceps mycelia varieties recognized for consumption:

  • Cordyceps sinensis
  • Paecilomyces hepialid
  • Ophiocordyceps sinensis
  • Cordyceps militaris
  • Cordyceps hawkesii
  • Cordyceps liangshanensis
  • Cordyceps barnesii
  • Cordyceps guangdongensis
  • Isaria cicadae
  • Paecilomyces cicadae

Cordyceps Uses
